Chapter 17

Principles of the Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another

LAWS OF EIRUV CHATZEIROTH AND SHITUFEI MEVO’OTH (TRANSFERS INVOLVING PROPERTY OWNED IN COMMON)

15. The amount of food to be provided for the eiruv chatzeiroth depends on the number of separately owned or tenanted food required properties which it covers.

a. If there are less than eighteen, the amount required is the equivalent in volume of about four-ninths of an egg for each property.

b. If there are eighteen or more, irrespective of how many more there may be, the total amount of food required is the equivalent in volume of about eight eggs.

16.a. The required quantity of bread, rolls or matzoth must continue to exist until after the commencement of Shabbath.

16.b. 1) The same eiruv can be made to cover more than one Shabbath, even all the Shabbathoth in the year.

2) In this case, one must use food which lasts, such as matzoth, since it must continue to exist in an edible state for the whole of the period.
