Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

10.a. With the important reservation mentioned at the end of this paragraph, it is therefore permissible

1) to wear a raincoat over a winter coat, even if one does so only in order that the winter coat should not become wet,

2) to wear galoshes,

3) to wear a specially made, fitted, plastic rain-cover over one’s hat and

4) for a woman to protect her head from the rain by covering it with a rain-hood or head scarf.

(See paragraph 31 below regarding hoods attached to coats.)

10.b. On the other hand, it is forbidden to go out

1) with a handkerchief laid over one’s collar to prevent it from being soiled by perspiration or

2) with a handkerchief (or a plastic bag) on one’s hat to protect it from the rain,

since in neither case is the handkerchief (or the plastic bag) being worn as an article of clothing in the normal manner.

10.c. An article should not be worn in reshuth ha-rabbim (as distinct from carmelith) for protection against the rain, if

there is a reasonable possibility that one may come to take it off when the rain stops.

11.a. The following paragraphs deal with the conditions under which one may go out into reshuth ha-rabbum with tachshit

11.b. The term tachshit (literally “an ornament”) is applied to anything worn

1) which is not an article of clothing but

2) which is required for the purposes of the human body

3) whether or not it is worn in a position in which it in visible.
