ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
17.a. 1) A person who has not yet grown used to wearing his contact lenses may not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing them.
2) This is because it is reasonable to suppose that, after a while, he may feel so uncomfortable that he will come to remove them and carry them for a distance of four amoth or more.
17.b. The wearing of contact lenses by a person who is used to wearing them is permitted.
18. Whether or not one may wear sunglasses in reshuth ha-rabbim depends on their type.
1) One should not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim with ordinary sunglasses which are worn to protect one’s eyes from the sun, since one may come to remove them in the shade and carry them for a distance of four amoth or more.
2) The prohibition extends also to sunglasses which one clips on to one’s everyday spectacles.
a. One may go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing sunglasses which are attached to ordinary spectacles by means of a hinge, because if one walks into the shade one simply swings them upwards without removing them.
b. The rules set out in paragraph 16 above apply to ordinary optical spectacles, worn in order to improve defective vision, even if they have tinted lenses and thus serve also as sunglasses.*
c. Dark glasses which are worn for medical reasons and are not removed even indoors are treated as ordinary spectacles, and one may go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing them.
___________
*Spectacles with photogrey lenses that change color with the strength of the light may be worn on Shabbath and Yom Tov.
