Chapter 18
Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv
Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.
ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
23.a. We have already seen, in paragraph 12 above, that it is the common practice to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing jewelry or other items of an ornamental or decorative nature in the normal way.
23.b. It is, however, forbidden to carry these items in the hand, even if that is the normal way in which they are used.
23.c. It is, consequently, not permitted
1) for a man to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim carrying a stick or cane in his hand (except as mentioned in paragraph 13 above), even if it is decorated with a silver knob or some similar ornament and serves as a mark of authority or dignity, or
2) for a woman to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim with a handbag or purse in her hand or over her arm, even if its only use is ornamental or decorative, as in the case of an evening bag.
