Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

24. One must distinguish between three different types of personal ornament.

a. 1) The first type consists of ornaments proper, such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches, which are worn for decorative purposes.

2) The practice is to take a lenient attitude with regard to ornaments of this nature and to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing them, as stated in paragraph 12 above.

3) One may rely on the practice even if the ornament is not visible, as where gloves are worn over rings.

b. 1) The second type consists of ornaments serving a dual purpose, only one of which is decorative.

2) An example is a gold brooch or clip in the shape of a key. (See paragraph 48 below.)

3) No objection need be raised if a person goes out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing an ornament of this kind, provided his principal intention is to wear it for decorative purposes.

c. 1) The third type consists of ornaments which

a) in fact serve a decorative purpose but

b) are attached to articles that are used for other purposes and which themselves may not be transferred from one reshuth to another.

2) There are no grounds for permitting a person to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing such an ornament.

3) For illustration, see paragraph 26 below.
