Chapter 20

Categories of Muktzeh

Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.

KELI SHE MELACHTO LE-ISSUR

14.a. Tefillin should be treated, for most purposes, as a keli she-melachto le-issur.

14.b. Consequently, one may remove tefillin inadvertently left Inside a tallith bag,

1) if one wishes to use the tallith and cannot easily take it out while the tefillin are still inside, or

2) if one needs to put one’s tallith into the bag for taking to the synagogue (where there is an eiruv chatzeiroth).

14.c. Although they are muktzeh, tefillin may be picked up and moved if

1) they have fallen down or are lying in a degrading position or

2) there is a danger that they will fall down or come to be in a degrading position or that they will be stolen.
