Chapter 20

Categories of Muktzeh

Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.

BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR

52.c. 1) Where neither the object which is muktzeh nor the article on which it is placed or hung serves the purposes of the other,

a) one should treat the article as a basis la-davar ha-assur, but,

b) in case of need, one may rely on the opinion that the article does not become a basis la-davar ha-assur in such circumstances, and may move it, subject to the rules set out in paragraph 47b above.

2) An example occurs where the muktzeh object is placed on the article merely because there is no other practical possibility available, as where

a) the muktzeh object is put on top of another article in a drawer, for lack of space in the bottom of the drawer (as in paragraph 68 below), or

b) candlesticks are placed on a tablecloth (as in paragraph 60 below).

3) In the above illustrations, it is intended that the muktzeh object and the candlesticks should be supported by the drawer and the table respectively. and the fact that they are supported by an article which is already in the drawer, or by the tablecloth, is merely incidental.
