Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR
53.a. An article does not become a basis la-davar ha-assur unless an object which is muktzeh
1) is placed or hung on it before sunset, with the intention that it remain there continuously until the stars come out on Friday night, and
2) in fact remains there throughout that period.
53.b. An article does not become a basis la-davar ha-assur, and may be moved, subject to the rules set out in paragraph 47b above,
1) if the muktzeh object was put into position with the intention of removing it before the commencement of Shabbath, but one subsequently forgot about it, or
2) even if the muktzeh object was simply put into position without any intention of leaving it there for the period from sunset until the stars come out, and one subsequently forgot about it, or
3) if the muktzeh object was put into position with the intention that it should be removed during the period from sunset until the stars come out on Friday night (for instance by a non-Jew or by being shaken off), or
4) if a non-Jew or a child removed the muktzeh object during the period between sunset and the time when the stars come out on Friday night, or
5) if a non-Jew or a child put the muktzeh object into position on Shabbath itself (whether with or without the knowledge and consent of the article’s owner), or
6) even if the owner of the article himself mistakenly placed or hung a muktzeh object on it on Shabbath.
