General Principles of Muktzeh (521)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

MAKING IT PROHIBITED FOR AN ARTICLE TO BE MOVED

24.a. It is forbidden to put an article into a particular position on Shabbath in order that an object which is muktzeh should fall into it, thereby making it prohibited for one to move the article.

24.b. This applies even if the article is itself a keli she-melachto le-issur which one wants to position (after using it for a permitted purpose or after moving it because one wished to make use of the place it occupied) where an object that is muktzeh to a more stringent degree (such as muktzeh mei-chamath chearon kis or muktzeh mei-chamath gufo) will fall into it.

24.c. Covering a muktzeh object with an article is permitted, as long as one does not thereby move the muktzeh object.

25. For example,

a. it is forbidden to put a receptacle under a hen on Shabbath so that it should lay an egg into it, but

b. it is permitted to put a vessel over an egg which has already been laid on Shabbath, so long as this does not move the egg.
