In Psalms it says “Fortunate is the man who fears Hashem, who wants His commandments very much!”. A Jewish person who believes that Hashem will reward those who keep His commandments and punish those who commit sins, for him it is fitting to run after the commandments and exert himself with all of his strength, soul and money to try and perform the commandments. He should exert himself far more than one who is trying to earn a million gold dinars, and far more than one who is just running after life, as the reward for keeping the commandments is very great.
Go out and learn, that our ancestor Avraham ran twice when performing the commandment of bringing guests into his house, as it says “And he ran towards them” and “And he ran towards the cattle”, and for those two runs Hashem loves Klal Yisrael and does not abandon them. On the other hand, we see that because Esav honored his father, he and his descendants received certain rewards right up until the coming of Mashiach. We see also that Yishmael received a reward for the commandment of circumcision which he fulfilled. The evil Nevuchadnetzar, merited to rule over the whole world because he took four steps for the honor of heaven. And all of the above is like emptiness and nothing compared to the reward which one receives in the next world for having fulfilled the commandments of Hashem, which is an enjoyment that no one can understand or measure while still in this world, to the extent that Chazal said that “One hour of enjoyment in the next world is better than all of the life in this world!”, which means that it is better even than being king over the whole world.
