Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS
6.a. As already mentioned, one may add a temporary extension on Shabbath and Yom Tov to an already existing protective shelter.
6.b. Thus, where a canopy has been open since before Shabbath or Yom Tov to the width of at least one tefach, it is permitted to add to it by opening it to its full extent.
6.c. If the canopy can be opened from both sides, it should be extended from the side which has already been opened to the extent of a tefach and not from the other side.
7.a. One may not put a roll of matting or blanket into position on Shabbath or Yom Tov to form a protective shelter, even in its rolled state, if the diameter of roll is one tefach or more.
7.b. Furthermore, a roll may not be opened out on Shabbath or Yom Tov to form a protective shelter,
even if
1) one placed it in position before Shabbath or Yom Tov with the object of unrolling it and
2) its diameter is more than a tefach.
7.c. However, if a roll was put in position and one tefach of it was unrolled before Shabbath or Yom Tov, one may unroll more of it on Shabbath or Yom Tov, thereby extending the protective shelter already formed by the first tefach.
