Erecting Shelters and Partitions (572)

Chapter 24

Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov

TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS

8.a. The prohibition against making a protective shelter on Shabbath and Yom Tov applies only if an empty space of at least one tefach in height is left underneath.

8.b. A cover may be put up if the space underneath it will be less than a tefach, since it is not regarded as a protective shelter.

9.a. One is not allowed to place a net or a canopy over a baby carriage (perambulator), a bed or a crib (cot), as protection against the sun or against flies. (See, however, paragraphs 11, 13 and 14 below.)
9.b. 1) Where a net or canopy was already spread over the carriage, bed or crib before Shabbath or Yom Tov, to the width of a tefach (excluding the diameter of any roll, as in paragraph 7 above), one is allowed to spread it out to its full extent.

2) When removing a net or canopy which one has extended in these circumstances, one should leave in position the tefach of covering which was spread before the beginning of Shabbath or Yom Tov and with which one started.
