Chazal have warned us not to rely on miracles. Instead, he should worry that maybe no miracle will happen, and even if they would perform a miracle for him, he would lose some of his merits. It should suffice for us that we receive the miracles which Hashem in His mercy and kindness performs for us every second, as we are like one lamb between seventy wolves, and if not for Hashem being there for us they would have swallowed us alive. Chazal say that one who receives a miracle does not recognize the miracle, as many people suffer from difficult miseries, big afflictions and hard illnesses, and if a miracle happens to them and they would be saved then their mouths would be filled with praises to Hashem and they would thank Him for His kindness and describe His wonders to people. How many more times doubled and tripled thanks we should give to Hashem when he gives us health, serenity and tranquility, and nothing bad happens. About this they said “The entire soul should praise Hashem!”, that a person must praise for every breath and that He saved him from bad illnesses and all the evils which happen in the world, and even if our mouths would be full with song etc. we would not manage to praise Him. If our ancestor Ya’akov said “I am too small for all the kindnesses!”, what can we say. We should at least flee from relying on miracles whenever we can, for if we have in our hands some good deeds and merits, and even those will be removed from us in return for miracles, we will be left without anything.
If a person relies on a miracle in his financial affairs he is a fool and an idiot. He is similar to a person who swaps a pearl for a clod of earth, and if he does not receive the required miracle he is guilty with his soul, and will be called to judgment almost like one who commits suicide. If a person puts himself in danger, he transgresses that which it says in the Torah “And you must be very well guarded for your souls!”, where the Torah adds the word “very” to teach us that we must worry about any possible chance of danger. One who transgresses the commandment of Hashem will be punished either in this world or in the next.
