There is a famous saying of Chazal that “One who is careful about the lights of Shabbos and Chanukah will merit to have sons who are learned in Torah”. When Chazal said that one should be “careful”, they meant that the candlestick should be clean and nice, and that one should light with pure olive oil and on Shabbos one should light many lights. How good it is to light seven lights, as they write in the name of the Ar”I za”l that the preparation of the lights should be done by the man and the lighting should be done by the woman. If in all the commandments one should strengthen himself to fulfil them in the best possible way, how much more so with commandments such as this one where such a great reward is promised, as a person should be willing to give away all of his earthly wealth to merit to have sons who are learned in the Torah.
