Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
COVERING WITHOUT INTENDING TO PROVIDE SHELTER
17.a. The previous paragraphs of this chapter have dealt with the erection of a covering intended either
1) to shelter or protect or
2) to furnish a usable space underneath.
17.b. One is allowed to spread or erect a covering not intended for either of these purposes,
1) if it has no walls at all or if the walls it has are less than a tefach wide,
2) if the walls were already standing before the commencement of Shabbath or Yom Tov and one now merely wishes to place the covering over them or even
3) if one holds the covering in place while someone else puts up the walls underneath.
17.c. The erection of a covering intended for neither of the above purposes is forbidden only if
1) the way in which one proceeds is
a) first to erect walls which have a width of at least one tefach each and
b) then to place the covering over them,
and
2) the conditions set out in paragraph 18 below are fulfilled.
