Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
ERECTION OF PARTITIONS
29.a. 1) a) It is forbidden to hang a curtain in front of a window if one attaches it both at the top and at the bottom.
b) The reason is that curtains are often left hanging in front of windows for a considerable period.
2) If one attaches the curtain only at its top end, whether and how one may hang it depends on the considerations set out in paragraph 28 above.
29.b. 1) a) According to those who hold the first view expressed in paragraph 28 above, a curtain may be hung on a wall for decorative purposes.
b) It may even be attached both at its top and bottom ends, but not of course with nails or tacks.
2) a) According to those who hold the second view, hanging the curtain on the wall with the intention that it should remain there for a few days or more involves the infringement of a prohibition laid down by the Torah.
b) This is so, even if one does not attach it at both ends but merely hangs it from the rail.
