Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
ERECTION OF PARTITIONS
28. There are differing opinions as to whether one is permitted to hang a curtain in place of a door in a case where one intends it to remain in position for a few days or more.
a. According to one view, one may do so, but
1) one may attach it only at the top (and not also at the bottom) and,
2) a) if the curtain is a large one, one should not hang it by oneself, but should avail oneself of the assistance of another person.
b) This is because the curtain might otherwise fold over to form a covering*, which, as we have seen, is forbidden on Shabbath and Yom Tov.
b. According to the other view, to do so would involve the infringement of a prohibition laid down by the Torah.
_____________
*It should be noted that, in this exceptional case, one should no form the covering, in spite of the fact that there is no intention to provide either shelter or a usable space below and that there are partitions.
