5. One must be careful not to ask others what another has said about him, as this causes them to speak rechilus, and he thus violates the prohibition of rechilus as well as causing others to do so. In most cases he is also guilty of transgressing numerous other prohibitions.

Only when it is clear to him the information is of a constructive purpose is he permitted to ask, so that he can protect himself, but he is forbidden to believe it.
