325. Analysis

Analysis is necessary for everything. If it is for the wisdom of the Torah, a person must use his brain to delve into the depths of the law, and to discuss questions and answers with wisdom, in order to sort out the hay and straw from the grain, and to purify the law and “whiten” it, and to decorate the “bride” (bride in Hebrew is “Kallah” which consists of the same letters as “Halachah” which means law). Similarly, when judging one must analyze the depths of the law so as to think of the correct verdict. This is also true in all other worldly affairs that every act and utterance needs a lot of thought and analysis as to whether he should perform it or not, and how and in which way it is fitting to do, and one who thinks about it will find goodness. The main rule is that a person should not consider himself wise, and not rely on his intuitiveness with the first impression, as about this the verse alludes “I said in my haste that every man is cheating!”.

It follows that it is good to learn with a study partner, and even in affairs of the world one who listens to advice is wise and salvation comes through much taking of advice and two heads are better than one. If he wishes to rely on his knowledge because he has no one from whom to take advice, he should do it and maybe it will work out for him, as everything which he thinks of at first sight (whether in learning Torah or worldly affairs) must be sought out and thought about and considered from every angle to the extent that he should try to contradict it as if he has someone standing opposite him arguing with him and he is trying with all of his strength to contradict the other person’s logical arguments, and through this (imaginary) debate the truth will come out. If, however, he tries to keep his opinion, who understands the mistakes, for there is nothing as easy as a person who is mistaken with his imagination, and he must beseech for mercy from the One who favors people with knowledge that He should lead him on the true path.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
