Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov
FEEDING AND OTHERWISE ATTENDING TO ANIMALS
21.a. 1) One may on Shabbath put food in front of animals or birds which are dependent on one for their food.
2) Not only their owner, upon whom they are dependent, but any other person may feed them.
21.b. With the exceptions mentioned in paragraph 23 below, one is not allowed to feed animals or birds which an not dependent on man for their food, even if one’s intention is simply to confer a benefit on the Almighty’s creatures.
21.c. In view of this, the custom of scattering grains or the leftovers of kugel to the birds on Shabbath Shira is to be disapproved.
21.d. Nonetheless, it is in order to shake crumbs out of a tablecloth (in a place where there is an eiruv or where no eiruv is needed), even though birds will eat them.
