Chapter 27
Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov
MILKING
51.a. Sometimes one has to test milk, and to that end one milks the animal into a strip-cup in order to determine, according to the appearance of the milk, whether or not it is fit to be drunk.
51.b. It is proper to refrain from this kind of milking on Shabbath or Yom Tov.
51.c. If the test milking cannot be brought forward and performed before the commencement of Shabbath or Yom Tov or delayed until after Shabbath or Yom Tov, one should consult a properly qualified rabbinical authority as to the course one should adopt.
52. All the rules which apply to milking on Shabbath are also followed on Yom Tov.
53. Each and every detail relating to the care of milking machines on Shabbath and Yom Tov, such as oiling, cleaning and changing parts, should be checked with a competent halachic authority who is well versed in the laws of Shabbath and Yom Tov.
