MAKING PREPARATIONS ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV FOR A SUBSEQUENT DAY

71. The examples below serve to illustrate the rule.

a. One may not prepare food on Shabbath, to be consumed after Shabbath has terminated.

b. 1) One may not wash dishes or cutlery which will no longer be used that day.

c. 1) One may not fold an article of clothing on one Shabbath for use on the following Shabbath, even if it is specifically intended for use only on Shabbath.

2) For rules regarding the folding of clothes in general, see Chapter 15, paragraphs 44 to 46.

d. One may not roll a sefer Torah on Shabbath to the portion that is to be read the next day, even if that next day is Yom Tov.

e. 1) One may not release a person from a vow, unless the release is required for that day.

f. 1) When the day before Passover falls on Shabbath, one may not wash the dishes after the last meal at which chametz is eaten, since they will certainly dishes not be required that day.

2) One should clean them of chametz, as one is obliged to do, by wiping it off with one’s finger, with a paper napkin or in some similar permissible manner.

3) Should this not be possible, one should try to find a non-Jew to wash the dishes.

4) If no non-Jew is available, one should rinse them oneself, but only to the extent needed to remove actual chametz.
