MAKING PREPARATIONS ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV FOR A SUBSEQUENT DAY

77. When the Fast of the Ninth of Av, which marks the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple, falls immediately after Shabbath, one should note the following:

a. one may eat and drink more than usual at the third Shabbath meal, even though one’s intention is to make it easier to fast the next day, but one should not say that that is why one is eating.

b. the leather-free shoes or slippers one is going to wear on the fast should not be brought to the synagogue on Shabbath;

c. one should not bring the Book of Lamentations to the synagogue while it is still Shabbath, even where there is an eiruv, unless one reads from it a little during Shabbath.

d. one should not change out of one’s Shabbath clothes before nightfall;

e. if possible, one ought to wait at home until the termination of Shabbath and then remove one’s Shabbath clothes, change one’s shoes and go to the synagogue.

f. if this is impracticable, one should not take off one’s ordinary shoes until after the intonation of Barechu at the commencement of the evening service (and, when one does take them off, one should be careful not to touch them with one’s fingers, so as to avoid the necessity for washing one’s hands on the fast day).
