MAKING PREPARATIONS ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV FOR A SUBSEQUENT DAY

76.a. Generally speaking, as a sign of mourning for the destruction of the Temple, it is forbidden to wear newly washed clothes during the first nine days of the month of Av.

76.b. If the clothes were washed and worn, even for only a short period, before the first of Av, they may be worn afterwards.

76.c. It is also customary to wear newly washed clothes on Shabbath occurring during these nine days.

76.d. Many people prepare clothes for use during these nine days by wearing them for a short while before the first of Av.

76.e. If one has forgotten to do so, one should not, on the Shabbath occurring during the nine days, put on washed clothes and then take them off after a short while, since this amounts to making preparations on Shabbath for a weekday.

76.f. What one may do in such a situation is to change, on Shabbath, out of the clean clothes one put on before Shabbath and into other, clean clothes, which one will leave on until after Shabbath, so that one will be left with two sets of reasonably clean clothes to wear during the week.
