MAKING PREPARATIONS ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV FOR A SUBSEQUENT DAY
81.a. Any otherwise permissible act
1) which is done without the involvement of any special bother and
2) which one is used to doing without thinking about the benefit that will result from its being done, may be done on Shabbath, even if one will derive a benefit from it after Shabbath, as long as one does not expressly say that one is making preparations for after Shabbath.
81.b. Consequently,
1) if one takes a tallith to the synagogue (in a place where there is an eiruv), one may carry it home again.
2) one may return a book to its place in the bookcase after use (but see paragraph 12 above);
3) one may put the arba’a minim back into water after use on the Yom Tov of Sukkoth, despite the fact that one will derive an advantage therefrom in that they will not dry up and so will be fit for one to use on the following day.
4) one may put food which has been left over after a meal back into the refrigerator,
5) one may stand a dirty dish in water on Shabbath if the remains of food will otherwise dry hard and stick to its sides (but, if the food has already dried on to its sides, the dish must not be stood in water on Shabbath, since, in that event, the dish is soaked with the specific thought in mind of making it easier to clean after Shabbath than it in at present, as explained in Chapter 12, paragraph 3)
6) a) a person may leave home on Shabbath afternoon, even on a very hot day, taking with him (in a place where there is an eiruv) a pullover to be worn when he is out in the evening (after Shabbath), although
b) it is better if he does not say he is taking it for the evening,
7) one may leave the house, even shortly before nightfall, carrying a key in one’s pocket-where there is an eiruv-so that one will be able to enter one’s house after Shabbath.
