REMUNERATION FOR SERVICES RENDERED ON SHABBATH OR YOM TOV
62.a. It is permissible to pay a hotel bill, even if one slept and ate at the hotel only on Shabbath.
62.b. This is because the payment also covers the hotel proprietor’s expenses for such things as
1) buying and cooking food before Shabbath,
2) cleaning and maintenance of the hotel before and after Shabbath and
3) laundry.
63.a. 1) The prohibition against receiving payment for services rendered on Shabbath forbids the receipt
of rent for the bare use of a room which is let only over Shabbath.
2) Rent may be received if it includes payment for some additional facility, such as the use of the landlord’s linen.
63.b. If no additional facility is provided, one ought to stipulate that the period of the rental should begin some while before Shabbath commences or should end some while after it terminates.
63.c. There is, of course, nothing wrong with the payment of rent for a period covering several days and including Shabbath.
