Chapter 18

Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

34.a. From what has been said above, it follows that one must not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing a tallith or arba kanfoth one of whose tzitzith has been damaged to the extent where it is no longer fit for use.

34.b. This is because one values the remaining three tzitzith and intends to use them when a fourth is attached.

34.c. The result is that, although at present serving no purpose, the tzitzith retain their separate identity and are not regarded as merely part of the tallith or arba kanfoth.

34.d. Apart from being a desecration of Shabbath, the wearing of the tallith or arba kanfoth would be a transgression of the general prohibition against wearing such a garment without proper tzitzith.

35.a. 1) If all of the tzitzith of a tallith or arba kanfoth have been damaged and not a single thread remains fit for use, what is left has lost its separate identity and is regarded as part of the tallith or arba kanfoth.

2) Thus, wearing it would not give rise to any breach of the prohibitions against transferring items from one reshuth to another or within reshuth ha-rabbim. (But see paragraph 34d above.)

35.b. The same applies when some threads are left which are fit for use but one has no intention of using them again because they are ragged.
