ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
33.a. 1) It is forbidden to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim (or carmelith) with any item which is attached to one’s clothing, if that item
a) does not serve the requirements of the garment to which it is attached,
b) would not be attached to it in the usual course of events and
c) is of value in one’s eyes and retains an identity distinct from that of the garment.
2) If, however, an item attached to one’s clothing is of no value in one’s eyes and its identity can be said to merge within that of the garment, one may go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing it.
33.b. 1) a) It is also forbidden to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing, attached to one’s clothing, an item that is unusable due to some defect or deficiency which one intends to remedy after Shabbath in order to render it fit for use again.
b) In such circumstances, the item retains an identity separate from that of the garment, even if it is
sewn on.
c) This is so whether or not the item itself has any intrinsic worth, since the intention to repair it lends it importance.
2) a) One may likewise not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim if the defective or deficient item is unusable in its existing state, but does have some intrinsic value.
b) In this case, its identity does not merge within that of one’s clothing.
c) This is so even if one has no intention of repairing the item after Shabbath.
