ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
41.d. 1) In the above cases, the intention to repair lends importance to the remains of the cord or the loop or to the surviving ribbon.
2) Consequently, one is considered to be carrying them about as separate items, and not wearing them as part of the garment.
41.e. 1) If one does not intend to repair the remains of the cord, sew together the remains of the loop or replace the missing ribbon, then one may go into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing the garment.
2) This is because the remains of the cord or of the loop or the surviving ribbon no longer retain any importance, and their identity merges within that of the garment.
41.f. 1) On the other hand, if a silver chain which is used to hold together the two sides of a tallith has snapped or is defective to the point where it cannot be used, one may not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing the tallith.
2) This is so even if one does not intend to repair the chain.
3) The reason is that the chain has an intrinsic value, despite the fact that it is broken, and cannot be said to be merely ancillary to the tallith.
