Chapter 20

Categories of Muktzeh

Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.

BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR

46.a. Subject to the qualifications contained in the following paragraphs, a basis la-davar ha-assur is an article on which there was placed or hung, before Shabbath, an object which is muktzeh.

46.b. An article may be a basis la-davar ha-assur even if, by itself, it would in no way be muktzeh, as for example food.

46.c. 1) A basis la-davar ha-assur acquires the same status as the muktzeh object which has been placed or hung on it.

2) It may not be moved during the whole of Shabbath, except in circumstances in which it would be permitted to move that muktzeh object.

3) This is so notwithstanding that the muktzeh object may have been removed from the basis la-davar ha-assur during the course of the Shabbath by a non-Jew or a child, or may have dropped off by itself.
