Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR
47.a. An article becomes a basis la-davar ha-assur only if a number of conditions, explained in paragraphs 50 to 56 below, are fulfilled.
47.b. If not all of these conditions are met, an article which supports an object that is muktzeh does not become a basis la-davar ha-assur, but the following rules apply.
1) One may move the article once the object that is muktzeh has been removed, for example by a non-Jew.
2) One may oneself tilt the article so that the muktzeh object falls off, provided that one needs to use the article or the place which it occupies.
3) One may even move the article while the muktzeh object is still on it, if
a) one needs to use the article or the place which it occupies and
b) one is afraid to make the muktzeh object fall off, lest it become spoiled or spoil something else.
4) Likewise, one may move the article with the muktzeh object still on it, if
a) one requires the muktzeh object in the place to which the article is being taken, so long as
b) one’s principal aim is to use the article itself or the place which it occupies.
5) One may neither
a) move the article with the muktzeh object still on it,
nor
b) tilt it to make the muktzeh object drop off, if one does not require the article or the place which it
occupies but wants to prevent the muktzeh object from being lost, stolen or damaged.
