Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR
65. With regard to moving a table whose drawer has become a basis la-davar ha-assur, the position is as follows:
a. If the drawer cannot be pulled completely out of the table, it is in effect a subsidiary part of the table, with the result that
1) the presence of the drawer does not also turn the table into a basis la-davar ha-assur,
2) the table may be moved, should one need it or the place which it occupies (as in paragraph 56 above).
and
3) the drawer alone may not be moved.
b. If the drawer can be pulled completely out of the table, it
is considered to have an identity distinct from that of the table, with the result that
1) the presence of the muktzeh drawer makes the table a basis la-davar ha-assur and
2) the table may consequently not be moved, unless, at the beginning of Shabbath, it also had on it an item which is not muktzeh and which is more important to one than the muktzeh object inside the drawer.
