Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR
72.a. 1) Notwithstanding the contents of the last two paragraphs, a person who finds a muktzeh object in his pocket on Shabbath need not usually fear that either the pocket or the particular article of clothing has become a basis la-davar ha-assur
2) a) This is because he almost certainly had no intention that the muktzeh object should remain in the pocket on Shabbath, but merely forgot to take it out before.
b) In those circumstances, as explained in paragraph 53 above, an article does not become a basis la- davar ha-assur
3) Nevertheless, he should shake the muktzeh object out of the garment before wearing it.
72.b. 1) Whenever possible, he should shake the muktzeh object out of his pocket in the place where he happens to be when he discovers it.
2) If he is unable to shake the object out there, for example because
a) he is afraid that the muktzeh object will be lost damaged or
b) he is wearing the garment and it is unbecoming to take it off and shake it out in front of other people or
c) he is in a place where it is embarrassing to shake out the muktzeh object,
he may- if there is an eiruv or it is otherwise permissible to transfer objects from one place to another- take the garment, with the muktzeh object still in its pocket, and shake it out elsewhere.
