Chapter 29: Laws Derived from Isaiah: Running, Walking (701)

Chapter 29

Laws Derived from Isaiah: Running, Walking, Commerce, Measuring, Reading, Speaking

RUNNING

3.a. “And respect it by not following your usual] ways” – your manner of walking on Shabbath should

not be the same as on other days of the week.

3.b. Consequently, as a general rule, one should not run on Shabbath, or walk with long strides, but should walk in a leisurely manner.

4. It is permissible to run

a. to escape from the rain,

b. in a place where one is afraid to walk slowly or

c. in any other comparable case of need.

5. Children are allowed to add to their enjoyment of Shabbath by playing running games. (See also Chapter 16, paragraph 39.)

6.a. “Your (usual] ways”-your ways are forbidden, but the ways of Heaven are permitted.

6.b. Consequently, it is permitted, indeed it is a mitzva, to run

1) to the synagogue,

2) to a Torah study session or

3) to any other place where one is going to perform a mitzva.
