Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS
10.a. One is permitted to add a temporary covering to an existing shelter on Shabbath or Yom Tov, even if the additional cover is intended to provide protection from something against which the original shelter is of no avail.
10.b. 1) One is, therefore, allowed to put a waterproof cover over a sukka when it is raining (to prevent the decorations from being spoiled).
2) Nevertheless, one should take care, in doing so, not to move the se’chach, as it is muktzeh.
11. The spreading of wide-mesh netting over a chicken coop or a baby carriage, to keep birds out, is permissible and does not infringe the prohibition against making a protective shelter.
