Erecting Shelters and Partitions (576)

Chapter 24

Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov

TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS

14.a. 1) Some beds, especially cribs, are made with an overhead rod or frame intended to support a canopy or net.

2) Subject to two conditions, the canopy or net may be drawn across to cover the bed or crib even if

a) it is not at present spread open to the extent of a tefach and

b) its purpose is to provide protection against flies or mosquitoes.

3) The two conditions are

a) that the canopy or net has been tied to one side or end of the bed or crib since before Shabbath or Yom Tov and

b) that it has cords attached for drawing it across

14.b. When removing such a net or canopy, one may take it off the crib or bed altogether, provided this does not involve any violation of the prohibition against untying knots, described in Chapter 15, paragraph 54.

14.c. 1) A canopy which merely needs to be opened out and is intended purely for decorative or ceremonial purposes, and not as a protective shelter, may be spread on Shabbath or Yom Tov, even if it has no cords attached.

2) an example is a canopy on supporting poles, if not intended for protection.
