Chapter 24

Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov

TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS

13.a. 1) A covering which
a) forms part of a structure or of an article and

b) has been fixed to it since before Shabbath or Yom Tov

may be laid or spread over it on Shabbath or Yom Tov.

2) This is so

a) whether the covering is attached by means of hinges, pressstuds, screws, slots or another equally effective method, and

b) whether the covering is required for protection against sun, rain or any other element.

13.b. 1) One may accordingly open the hood of a baby carriage, provided it has been attached since before Shabbath or Yom Tov.

2) Once the hood is opened to the extent of a tefach (measured horizontally), one may also spread a net or a canopy over the whole baby carriage, although one should begin to spread it from the end where the hood is.

3) If one has attached the hood to a baby carriage on Shabbath or Yom Tov, even in a permitted manner. for example by means of press-studs or slots, one should not open it that day.

4) One may open a sunshade that has been attached to a baby carriage since before Shabbath or Yom Tov.

13.c. The roof of a sukka which is attached to its sides by hinges may be opened and closed on Shabbath and Yom Tov. (See also paragraph 10 above.)
