Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
COVERING WITHOUT INTENDING TO PROVIDE SHELTER
20.a. 1) One should not bring an open barrel, stand it in position and then make a table by putting a plank across its opening, since one will thereby have placed a covering over a space surrounded by walls on all four sides. (See paragraph 18b above.)
2) What one should do is to turn the barrel over and lay the plank across its base.
20.b. If one wishes to make a table out of a plank with upside-down barrels at both ends, the considerations explained in paragraph 19 above are applicable.
21.a. The situation is different if one has put the open barrels into the required position before the commencement of Shabbath or Yom Tov.
21.b. In that case, there is nothing wrong with placing the plank over them on Shabbath or Yom Tov, (See paragraph 17b2 above.)
