Chapter 22
General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov
OBJECTS WHICH, ON SHABBATH, BECOME FIT FOR USE
11.a. An item which is not fit for use at the commencement of Shabbath is, nevertheless, not muktzeh and may be moved or even eaten if
1) it is clear that it will, during the course of that Shabbath, become fit for use and
2) the existing conditions in which the article is unusable are not to the liking of its owner, who, on the contrary, is looking forward to the moment when the article can be used.
11.b. Where, however, the existing conditions are to the owner’s liking at the beginning of Shabbath, such an item is and remains muktzeh
1) even if it is clear that, during the course of the Shabbath, conditions will change and the item will become fit for use and
2) even if the change which will take place later is also to the owner’s liking and
3) even after the change has occurred and the item is fit to be used.
11.c. Similarly, if it is not clear that the item will become fit for use during the course of the Shabbath, it is muktzeh, even if
1) the existing conditions are not to its owner’s liking and
2) he would like them to change so that the item will become usable.
(In this light, see paragraph 3 above.)
11.d. The rules stated in this paragraph are illustrated in paragraphs 12 and 13 below.
