General Principles of Muktzeh (514)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

OBJECTS WHICH, FOR EXTRANEOUS REASONS MAY NOT BE MOVED

14.a. An item which is not in itself muktzeh, but which, for some extraneous reason, one is not permitted to move when Shabbath commences, may not be moved on Shabbath even after that reason has ceased to exist except

1) in case of pressing need or

2) if there was a possibility, however remote, of moving the item in a permissible manner at the commencement of Shabbath.

14.b. 1) If the extraneous reason is bound up with the infringement of a prohibition which is purely Rabbinical (and not a Rabbinical extension of a Torah prohibition), then the item may be moved once that reason has ceased to exist.

2) Consequently, an item which is not itself muktzeh, and supports a muktzeh object in circumstances which do not make it a basis la-davar ha-assur, may be moved once the muktzeh object has been taken away, as stated in Chapter 20, paragraph 47b1.
