General Principles of Muktzeh (533)

Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

MATTER OF A REPULSIVE NATURE

44. Garbage pails and chamber-pots made of metal or synthetic materials are not muktzeh after they have been washed.

45.a. 1) A chamber-pot may be emptied after use.

2) A domestic garbage pail may be emptied if

a) it is hard to bear the smell given off by it or

b) it is full to the top and one has no other garbage pail one could use.

45.b. 1) If the chamber-pot or garbage pail is made of material other than metal or plastic, one should not bring it back to its place after emptying-even if it is clean-unless

a) one is still holding it in one’s hand or

b) one puts into it water which is fit to be drunk at least by an animal.

2) Even then, one should not bring it back if

a) it is safe in the place to which it has been taken and

b) one does not need to use it again.
