Chapter 22
General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov
ARTICLES WHICH NOT EVERYBODY WOULD USE
46.a. 1) An article which is fit to be used on Shabbath is nonetheless muktzeh if it is not worth very much and is considered valueless by its well-to-do owner, who would not normally use it at all.
2) This is despite the fact that someone less well-off would make use of it.
46.b. An example is a piece of a broken object which, although still usable, was thrown away by its owner before Shabbath.
46.c. Such an article is muktzeh even for persons who are not as well-to-do as its owner and still consider it to have some value.
47.a. An article which is not worth very much, but is fit to be used on Shabbath, is not muktzeh if it has some value in the eyes of its owner, despite the fact that a richer person would not use it.
47.b. The article is, however, treated as muktzeh for such a richer person, unless he happens to be a member of the owner’s household.
