Housekeeping and Use of Domestic Facilities on Shabbath and Yom Tov.
CLEANING
2.a. It is forbidden to sweep a floor which is not paved or otherwise covered.
2.b. 1) In a place where most of the floors are not paved or covered in some other way, it is forbidden to sweep even a covered floor.
2) By way of illustration, in a camp consisting mainly of tents or huts with uncovered, earthen floors, it is forbidden to sweep even in the few huts which do have wooden or concrete flooring.
3. One may neither apply polishing cream to, nor polish, a wooden floor or linoleum.
4.a. One should not brush a carpet vigorously nor clean it with a specially designed carpet-sweeper, not even with a sweeper which is not electrically operated.
4.b. It is also prohibited to shake the dust out of a carpet vigorously.
4.c. One may lightly shake a carpet to remove some of the surface dust, but not if the carpet
1) is dark in color and
2) is new or looks new.
4.d. One is allowed gently to sweep even a dark-colored, new carpet with a soft broom in order to collect rubbish lying on its surface.
