1. Although it is forbidden to derive any benefit from the Chanukkah lights, that refers only to some tangible use, such as reading or eating by its light. However, it is permissible to sit in the room where they are lit (Shulchan and Mishnah Berurah 673).

2. Even when several members of the household are kindling Chanukkah lights for themselves,shamosh-attendant lamps should be kindled for each person, so that if anyone comes to use the illumination, it will be from the light of ashamosh (ibid.).
