Honoring Parents – 16

  1. If a father wishes to serve [i.e., act as an attendant for] his son, the son is allowed to accept the service from him. But if the father is learned in Torah, the son should not accept his service, so that the father not feel distress (Shulchan Aruch, YD 240:25).

2.     A person whose parents are resha’im (wicked), who freely sin — some say that the son is nevertheless obligated in their honor and awe, while other authorities say that he has no such obligation. All opinions, however, agree that it is forbidden to cause them anguish, and it is certainly forbidden to curse or strike them (ibid. 240:18 with Shach ad loc; 241:4).

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
