Honoring Torah Scholars – 18

1. The obligation to rise before a Torah scholar [or the elderly] applies when the scholar passes within four amos-cubits of the person (Shulchan Aruch, YD 244:4).

2. It is forbidden to close one’s eyes when seeing a Torah scholar from afar in order to avoid standing before him as he passes by (ibid. 244:3).
