Chapter 17
Principles of the Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another
LAWS OF EIRUV CHATZEIROTH AND SHITUFEI MEVO’OTH (TRANSFERS INVOLVING PROPERTY OWNED IN COMMON)
19.a. Wherever possible, one should make similar arrangements, by way of shitufei mevo’oth, for all of the occupants of a street, a district, or even a whole town.
19.b. This can only be done if the area included does not, for one reason or another, fall within the definition of a reshuth ha-rabbim, but is only a carmelith. (See paragraphs 3 and 4 above.)
19.c. The rules relating to the making of shitufei meuo’oth are detailed and complicated, and a qualified rabbinical authority must be consulted before the task is undertaken.
19.d. It involves
1) surrounding the whole of the area in question by a fence, either real or nominal,* fulfilling specified requirements, and
2) providing food for the owners and tenants in a manner similar to that set out in paragraphs 13 to 17 above.
20.a. There is no need for those participating in shitufe mevo’oth to make an eiruv chatzeiroth as well.
20.b. Nevertheless, it is recommended that the person making the shitufei mevo’oth should have in mind, when putting the bread, rolls or matzoth in place, that they should serve, not only for shitufei mevo’oth, but also for eiruv chatzeiroth.
