Laws of Muktzeh on Yom Tov
3.a. 1) One may move a muktzeh object on Yom Tov in order to facilitate the consumption of food.
2) One may not, however, eat the muktzeh object itself, nor may one use it, except within the limits set out in Chapter 20, paragraphs 7 to 12 (when the object is a keli she-melachto le-issur).
3.b. By way of illustration,
1) one may
a) remove a stone which is muktzeh (as mentioned in Chapter 20, paragraph 25) from on top of a container, in order to reach the food inside, and
b) move a purse used for holding money, in order to take out the key of a locked cupboard or pantry containing food one requires, but
2) one may not
a) eat an egg which was laid on Yom Tov,
b) use the oil remaining in a lamp which was lit in honor of Yom Tov,
c) crack nuts with a stone which is muktzeh mei- chamath gufo or
d) move something which is muktzeh in order to feed it to an animal.
3.c. A muktzeh object which is lying on food in circumstances which make the food a basis la-davar ha-assur (as explained in Chapter 20, paragraph 78) may not be moved, even if one wants to move it in order to eat the food.
