Plants and Trees

16. The following examples illustrate the prohibition against the use on Shabbath or Yom Tov of objects directly hanging from, attached to, or supported by a tree.

a. One must not put anything into, or take anything out of, a basket hanging on the trunk of a tree or on one of its branches.

b. One must not put anything into, or take anything out of, the pockets of a coat hanging on a tree.

c. One must not use a swing which is attached, even if on only one side, to a tree.

d. One must not hang a swing from a pole

1) which is fixed between two trees or

2) which is fixed at one end to a tree and at the other to a wall

e. One must not climb a ladder which is leaning aga a tree, even if it has been in that position since before Shabbath or Yom Tov.
