Plants and Trees
17. As shown by the following examples, one may, on Shabbath or Yom Tov, use an article which is indirectly hanging from, attached to, or supported by a tree, but only if the tree is sufficiently firm not to sway a result of such use.
a. 1) One may put things into, or take things out of, a basket which, since before the beginning Shabbath or Yom Tov, has been hanging on a nail driven into a tree.
2) One must not, however, hang the basket itself the nail on Shabbath or Yom Tov or remove it.
b. 1) One may put things into, or take things out of, the pockets of a coat which, since before the beginning of Shabbath or Yom Tov, has been hanging on a nail driven into a tree.
2) One must not, however, hang the coat itself on the nail on Shabbath or Yom Tov or remove it.
c. One may use a swing which has been hanging from pole attached to a tree since before Shabbath or Yom Tov.
d. 1) One may dry one’s hands on a towel which has been hanging on a line strung between two trees since before Shabbath or Yom Tov.
2) One must not, however, take the towel off the line.
